Sam Greenwood Wins partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona €50k SHR for €1M

Canadian pro Sam Greenwood has won the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Super High Roller in Barcelona for €1,000,000 after overcoming a tough final table after starting the final day as one of the shorter stacks.

The 57 entries created a total prizepool of €2.8m, with a cool €1m up top for the eventual winner, with all 7 of today’s final tablists guaranteed at least €110,000.

Sam Greenwood started the final table in 5th place out of 7 and at one point was just over a single big blind away from elimination, holding a 600k stack with blinds at 250,000/500,000. However, the softly spoken Canadian managed to hit a series of double ups, and by the time play had reached four-handed he had moved up to third place with just under 12m chips.

The first casualties of the final table were Austrian Matthias Eibinger who made the min-cash of €110,000, followed by the last remaining partypoker pro Joao Simao who fell in 6th for €160,000. Ending his deep run in 5th place for €210,000 was French Pharmaceutical boss and high stakes poker junkie Jean-Noel Thorel. Thorel is a regular on the circuit where he predominantly plays high rollers and main events and has just short of $3m in cashes. However, despite having made dozens of final tables including 6 runner-up spots he has yet to win an event according to

That left the final four with Spain’s Sergio Aido leading, with overnight leader Patrik Antonius in second place, Greenwood in third, and the USA’s final hope Keith Tilston in fourth.

By this point Tilston was by far the shortest stack with under 4m of the 57m chips in play and he got those all-in against Antonius with Tilston’s up against Antonius’ . It was pretty much game over for the American on the flop, which came down , giving Antonius two pairs. While the gave Tilston a couple of outs, the river sent him packing in 4th place, good for a €284,500 payday.

Not long after Greenwood managed to double-up yet again against Antonius. On a board of with around 8 million chips already in the pot Greenwood went all-in on theriver for another 8m chips. A reluctant Antonius eventual called before mucking his hand in despair when Greenwood revealed for top pair to boost himself into the chiplead with over 24m chips, while Antonius now had to play short-stack with just 8.6m chips remaining after making a crying call with just bottom pair.

Antonius wasn’t to recover from that body blow and ended up busting to Sergio Aido after getting his remaining chips in on a flop holding for top pair and found himself a 2:1 underdog to Aido’s despite holding the lead going into the turn. Aido hit one of his many outs on the turn with the giving him a straight before hitting yet another on the river with the making his flush. Either way Antonius was a goner, collecting €400,000 for his third place finish. It’s been a great few months for the usually tournament-shy Antonius as he has now cashed for $4,369,656 in 2018 alone.

Heads-up play began with Aido leading with a 33.2m to 22.7m and blinds at 500k/1m. That was soon overturned by a rampant Greenwood, however, who found the deck hitting him square in the face. The Canadian pro took the lead after winning a 22m chip pot without showdown when his all-in on the river following heavy betting on a board forced a fold from Aido pushing Greenwood over 40m and Aido under 17m.

Aido made a small comeback to go back over 20m but it was over soon after the next break when Greenwood managed to get his opponent to put all his chips in on a  board. The river had been unkind to Aido when he revealed – had most other cards in the deck fallen he could have got away but pairing the river pushed him into making the call. As it was he had to concede defeat when Greenwood showed for top pair to take the title and the €1m prize-money. Aido, meanwhile had to settle for runner-up and a none too shabby €600,000 payday.

This is Sam Greenwood’s second seven-figure win from the partypokerLIVE tour in just five months, as back in November last year he won the partypoker Caribbean Poker Party $5.3k Main Event for $1,000,000.
